The Swedish Prosecution Authority has called for a review of the possibility of imposing prison sentences on those who use illegal IPTV services, in response to a government proposal to toughen penalties for unauthorized television broadcasting.
Currently, the law only penalizes those who distribute illegal IPTV services, but the government, in a new inquiry, has requested a review of the legislation to explore the possibility of criminalizing their use as well. In its response to the inquiry, the Prosecution Authority stated that “there are strong grounds for criminalizing the possession of illegal equipment for personal use,” according to Expressen.
The Authority added that a prison sentence should be considered, as it would facilitate the work of the police and provide them with additional investigative tools.
The Prosecution Authority wrote in its statement: “A prison sentence would allow for the use of investigative techniques such as home searches, remote access to device content, and physical searches, with the aim of finding evidence of illegal acquisition, use, or possession.”
It explained that these tools cannot be used under the current penalties.
The government is currently reviewing the proposals before making a decision on a possible amendment to the law. Available statistics indicate that over 3 million people in Sweden watch IPTV channels. Will 3 million people in Sweden be imprisoned?
