RBL beaten 4-1 at Como in Champions League opener
RB Leipzig suffered a 4-1 defeat away to Como 1907 in their opening Champions League game on 10th September 2026.
Como begin on the front foot, pressing high and putting our boys under pressure from the outset. The first chances fell to Cesc Fàbregas’ side.
Maarten Vandevoordt produced a fine save to deny Anastasios Douvikas in the 13th minute, but the goalkeeper was beaten two minutes later. Martin Baturina was able to get a shot away from close range inside the penalty area and found the back of the net to put Como 1-0 ahead (15’).
RBL almost responded immediately. Straight from the restart, Antonio Nusa found himself one-on-one with Como goalkeeper Jean Butez after getting on the end of a long ball, but his finish was too central and Butez made the save (16’).
Two chances go begging
Leipzig then began to create more opportunities. Andrija Maksimović and Marc Guiu, who were both making their first starts for the club, went close in quick succession. Butez first made an excellent save to keep out Maksimović’s curling effort, before Guiu sent a promising header wide just seconds later (36’).
Instead of RBL celebrating an equaliser, Como instead went on to double their lead at the other end. The hosts broke quickly, as Douvikas raced clear and kept his composure in front of Vandevoordt to make it 2-0 (38’). RBL therefore headed into the break two goals down.
Maksimović pulls one back as RBL push for more
The Red Bulls came flying out of the blocks after half time and initially pinned Como back inside their own half. However, the hosts scored with their first dangerous attack of the second period, as Assane Diao made it 3-0 (54’).
RBL refused to give in and were rewarded four minutes later. Maksimović struck the ball cleanly with his left foot and found the top-left corner. His first goal for the club reduced the deficit to 3-1 (58’).
Leipzig continued to push, with Martín Demichelis introducing Assan Ouédraogo, Tidiam Gomisand Brajan Grudafrom the bench. However, RBL were unable to make their pressure count.
Instead, Como had the final say in the 91st minute, when Máximo Perrone scored to complete a 4-1 win for the hosts.
