Sweden is preparing to launch its new government-issued electronic ID, “Sverige-id,” this coming December. It will serve as an additional alternative to existing options like BankID and Freja+, with the police announcing that appointment booking for the new ID will open on November 1.

The Swedish Agency for Digital Government (DIGG) approved the new electronic ID—developed by the police—in April.

What are the features of Sverige-id?
The new ID is designed to function in a manner very similar to BankID, which is currently widely used in Sweden.

Holders will also be able to log in to and use public digital services in other EU countries—a feature that could benefit, for instance, individuals working or studying in another European nation or those needing to interact with authorities there.

BankID and Freja+ have also previously been registered for use with public digital services across the EU.

Who is eligible?
A broader range of people will be eligible to apply for Sverige-id compared to some current solutions.

Non- Citizenship holders: For individuals registered in Sweden who do not hold Swedish citizenship, Sverige-id will replace the ID card currently issued by the Swedish Tax Agency.

Applications for the new ID at police passport offices will begin on December 1, 2026, while appointments with the police can be booked starting November 1.
