The Orthodox priest Father Georgy Gapon is often associated with early revolutionary events. A Russian Orthodox priest, Gapon led the Assembly of Russian Factory and Mill Workers and organized a peaceful workers’ procession in St. Petersburg on January 22, 1905, to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II. This event, known as Bloody Sunday, turned tragic when imperial troops fired on the crowd, killing and wounding hundreds. The massacre sparked widespread unrest, fueling the 1905 Russian Revolution, a precursor to the 1917 revolutions.
Fr. Gapon’s role was significant in galvanizing workers and exposing the Tsarist regime’s brutality. After Bloody Sunday, he briefly called for action against the Tsar.
