The high school games have just started, and the local teams are hoping to get off on the right foot.
There were several season-opening football games, and a number of Nantucket-Martha’s Vineyard rivalry games.
The weather cooperated and it was a nice day for games.
Here is what happened on the Cape and Islands today for high school sports:
Football
Sandwich 47, Upper Cape 8: The Blue Knights (1-0) rolled with an explosive offense to beat the Rams (0-1).
Quarterback Damian King tossed two touchdown passes and threw for 121 yards total for Mashpee. Both touchdown passes went to Tyler Jones of 63 and 10 yards. Johnny Pensak rushed for three touchdowns and finished with 112 yards on the ground. Ocean McElroy ran for two touchdowns and had 138 yards total.
Aiden DiMestico rushed for 55 yards and scored the only Upper Cape touchdown.
Burncoat 34, Bourne 6: The Canalmen (0-1) fell on the road to their Worcester-based opponent.
Oakmont 28, Nauset 19: The Warriors (0-1) lost a close game at home.
Nantucket 16, East Bridgewater 8: It was a good start to the season for the Whalers (1-0). Nantucket earned the low-scoring win over a solid Vikings team. New Nantucket coach Fernando Jones earned his first win with the Whalers.
Boys Soccer
Scituate 0, Nauset 0: The Warriors (1-0-1) took the point as both teams failed to score.
Nantucket 2, Martha’s Vineyard 1: The Whalers (2-0) topped the rival Vineyarders (2-1) to stay perfect on the young season.
Girls Soccer
Martha’s Vineyard 3, Nantucket 1: The Vineyarders (2-0) became the first area team to win two games this season after beating the Whalers (0-2).
Field Hockey
Nantucket 0, Martha’s Vineyard 0: The Vineyarders (1-1-1) and Whalers (0-1-1) were all knotted up in this rivalry game. Senior Eva Coelho and goalkeeper Eliza Belle Carestia led the Vineyarders defensively. Martha’s Vineyard also played well in the midfield.
