At a United Nations Security Council meeting held on June 22, 2026. The Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, Claudio Cordone, stated that:
“The political transition in Syria is at a critical juncture requiring inclusivity and accountability.”
He emphasized the importance of achieving transitional justice swiftly and fairly, holding all perpetrators of atrocities and heinous crimes accountable,
“not just those associated with the Assad regime,” and addressing conflict-related sexual violence.
And referred to the Secretary-General’s 2025 report on conflict-related sexual violence, including violations against Alawite women during the violence in the coastal region last March, perpetrated by armed elements and “some members of the government security forces.”
He urged the government to ensure that “these crimes are addressed through transitional justice mechanisms and that appropriate measures are taken for accountability, protection, and assistance to survivors, as well as prevention.”
