Press Releas Russian Patriarch Kirill

Patriarch Kirill Removed from EU Sanctions List Against Russia
Under pressure from both Bulgaria and Italy, the European Union has removed Patriarch Kirill’s name from the draft of its latest sanctions package.
The name of Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, was removed from the draft of the EU’s 21st sanctions package after Bulgaria and Italy objected to including a religious leader among those targeted by the proposed restrictions.
According to newspaper sources, Bulgaria initially requested that Patriarch Kirill’s name be excluded from the sanctions list. Kirill’s name was subsequently removed, and Italy later supported this move.
Diplomats reported that the sanctions package against Russia was significantly weakened during negotiations.
