Trial of Syrian War Criminals
Today marks the first chapter in the trial of Syrian war criminals.
The Damascus Criminal Court issued death sentences against leaders of the ousted regime – the Assad regime – including Bashar al-Assad, Maher al-Assad, and several other leaders. These sentences were issued in absentia because they are not in Syria (some are in Russia). A verdict was also issued in person against Atef Najib, who was present in court.
It should be noted that this is the Court of First Instance, and the verdict is not final, as there is an appeal process before the Court of Cassation.
