In recent days, the sectarian divide in Syria has become increasingly apparent. Decisions made by the interim governmentโbased on Islamic law (Islamic Sharia) targeting Christians and other minoritiesโcontradict the Syrian constitution and have become a hallmark of this authority, which has clear jihadist Islamist roots.
Father Spyridon Tanous has spoken of very serious plots being hatched against Christians. Unlike the Alawites and Druze, Christians have not yet faced attempted extermination, despite the church bombing last summer and the burning of churches in southern Syria.
Father Tanous stated that he will appear on an Arab media platform this week to reveal further grave plots being prepared against Christians.
He added that the Orthodox Patriarchate, which represents the majority of Christians in Syria, has been significantly weakened.
Father Tanous also stated that Ahmed al-Sharaa imposed a deal on Patriarch John Xโa deal that will eliminate any hope for Christians to participate in public life in Syria under the rule of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
Among other things, Father Tanous revealed that this deal includes preventing any Orthodox church outside Syria from intervening to help Christians inside the country.
He also pointed to Tom Barrackโs complicity in the destruction of the Christian community.
