The Swedish Migration Agency has decided to tighten naturalization and residency procedures, resulting in over 87,000 applications being placed on long waiting lists. This has pushed many into what is described as a “gray area” in terms of legal status and stability.
Authorities have begun implementing strict security protocols that are no longer limited to criminal record checks but now include in-depth scrutiny of applicants’ biometric identities.
The procedures also include what is known as “past vetting,” through a thorough examination of applicants’ backgrounds in Syria, both before and after 2011.
In addition, thousands of files have been suspended for direct review by the Swedish Security Service (SÄPO), ostensibly to investigate any potential security links.

These developments have sparked widespread concern among Syrians in Sweden, amid questions about the future of residency permits and citizenship, and whether these measures are paving the way for a more stringent policy in the next phase.
