PETOSKEY — Northern Michigan teams have stood out on the big stage of the boys cross country postseason for years now.
Just last year, Charlevoix earned a Division 3 state title and Maple City Glen Lake earned a Division 4 runner-up state finish.
Just a few years ago, Traverse City Central finished runner-up and Traverse City West’s boys are currently ranked No. 2 in Division 1.
But, along with the talented Titans this season, there’s a Division 2 program making waves and creeping into the statewide view.
Petoskey’s boys, currently ranked No. 8 in the latest Division 2 poll, have put together quite the resume in 2026 and added to it for the first time at home with the annual Petoskey Kiwanis Invite.
Petoskey placed first overall, with five members running sub 17:20.
The strong day on the home course follows a runner-up finish the weekend prior in the Holly-Duane Raffin race, where they competed among 20 teams. That performance followed a first place finish in the Division 2 Spartan race in East Lansing, where they bested more than 30 teams.

The Petoskey Invite was led by senior Reeve Oberman behind a season-best time of 16 minutes, 30.2 seconds, second best among all runners across every division.
Behind Oberman, Garrett Lansing ran 17:09.0, good for fourth, then Jack Frentz placed fifth in 17:14.0. Carson Brey also ran to a sixth place finish (17:16.0); Owen Young ran a new personal best to place seventh (17:16.2); Tyler Royle placed ninth (18:22.4); and Henry Burris took 12th (18:52.7).
One of the biggest reasons for Petoskey’s leap from a year ago has come from the group of seniors at the top, from Oberman and Frentz, to Lansing and Brey.
Lansing’s time from the 2025 Petoskey Invite dropped by more than a minute. Brey dropped just over a minute from last year’s race, while Frentz, who ran JV in last season’s Kiwanis Invite, dropped half a minute.
The Northmen will get back to the course and try to bring in more season hardware in the annual Shepherd Bluejay Invite this weekend.
They’ll also host the Big North Conference championships later in October, welcoming BNC teams on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
