Germany: Full travel warning to Syria

Germany’s Foreign Ministry (Auswärtiges Amt) updated its Syria travel and security advice on 29 October 2026. It maintains a full travel warning against going to Syria and notes that the German Embassy in Damascus remains closed to the public, with only extremely limited consular support available.Auswaertiges-amt

Key points from the official advisory (Stand: 29.10.2026)

Travel warning remains in force: “Vor Reisen nach Syrien wird gewarnt” (travel to Syria is warned against). The status is listed as unchanged in validity since the update date, with the main revision concerning the regional security situation.Auswaertiges-amt

Embassy status: The German Embassy in Damascus is closed to general visitor traffic. Emergency assistance and further consular services remain the responsibility of the German Embassy in Beirut. Germans in Syria can receive only extremely limited help in acute emergencies.Auswaertiges-amt

Security situation in Damascus: Repeated incidents in the city centre in summer 2026, including bomb attacks that caused deaths and injuries (e.g., a café attack in July 2026 and attacks near an internationally used hotel).

Broader situation inside Syria: Remains tense and unstable. Criminal attacks, kidnappings and robberies continue; IS remains active underground and capable of attacks anywhere; elevated risk in coastal areas (kidnappings and extralegal killings); some border crossings are closed or can close without notice, complicating exit.

Regional security: Extremely volatile due to the Iran conflict and recently intensified by military clashes between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. Sudden escalation without warning remains possible and can cause major flight disruptions, airspace closures or cancellations (as occurred in spring 2026). An elevated abstract terrorist threat continues.

Advice for Germans: Register in the Krisenvorsorgeliste and keep details updated; avoid military sites, demonstrations and large gatherings; monitor news and take air-raid warnings seriously; keep phones and power banks charged. Those already in Syria despite the warning should have a professional security concept and make contingency arrangements (powers of attorney, will, custody issues) in case they cannot leave as planned
