The Detroit Lions are about to face the most aggressive defense in the NFL, but there’s one major reason to believe Jared Goff and company could have an advantage in Sunday’s showdown against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.
Goff has been one of the NFL’s most effective quarterbacks against the blitz this season.
That’s particularly important considering Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores is blitzing at a rate the league has rarely seen.
And if the Vikings continue sending extra rushers at the same staggering pace, Detroit’s offense could have opportunities to make them pay.

Jared Goff Has Been Outstanding Against the Blitz
Minnesota enters Sunday’s matchup at 6-0, largely because of a defense that has been overwhelming opposing quarterbacks.
The Vikings have blitzed on approximately 70% of defensive dropbacks this season, easily the highest rate in the NFL. Washington ranks second at approximately 43%.
Minnesota also leads the league in scoring defense, allowing just 12.3 points per game.
But here’s where things get interesting for Detroit.
Goff has completed 70% of his passes against the blitz for 605 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions, producing a 123.3 passer rating in those situations.
Those numbers are remarkable considering how difficult the Vikings have made life for opposing quarterbacks.
Detroit’s quarterback also enters the matchup with 14 touchdown passes and zero interceptions through six games, demonstrating the kind of decision-making that will be essential against Flores’ unpredictable defense.
The matchup has become especially intriguing because Goff has already demonstrated an ability to punish aggressive defenses throughout the season.
Minnesota may be the most difficult test yet, but Goff has the experience and production to give Detroit a legitimate chance.
Why Vikings’ Aggressive Defense Could Backfire Against Detroit
The Vikings aren’t simply blitzing more often than everyone else.
They’re disguising pressure, changing coverage responsibilities, and forcing quarterbacks to identify where defenders will be coming from before the snap.
Minnesota blitzed Indianapolis on more than 85% of its dropbacks last Sunday, the highest single-game rate recorded during the NFL’s Next Gen Stats era.
That approach helped limit the Colts to just 108 passing yards.
But Detroit has something Indianapolis struggled to provide.
An explosive passing attack capable of punishing defenses when they leave receivers in favorable matchups.
Jameson Williams has been particularly dangerous lately, recording seven receptions for 138 yards and four touchdowns over his last two games.
His speed creates an obvious challenge when defensive backs are asked to defend without consistent help over the top.
And as we previously examined, defenses have frequently played deeper coverage against Detroit specifically to prevent Williams from getting behind them.
If Minnesota commits additional defenders to rushing Goff, that could create more favorable opportunities for Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta.
Of course, those opportunities only matter if Goff has time to throw.
Jahmyr Gibbs Could Be the X-Factor
Here’s another reason Detroit could have an advantage.
Jahmyr Gibbs isn’t just one of the NFL’s most explosive running backs. He’s also become increasingly important in pass protection.
Against Minnesota, that responsibility could be enormous.
The Vikings feature dangerous pass rushers, including Blake Cashman, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Dallas Turner.
Turner has generated 36 pressures this season, the most among Minnesota defenders.
The Lions will need Gibbs to recognize incoming blitzers and prevent free rushers from getting to Goff.
But there’s also an opportunity to attack.
Detroit’s offense has the personnel to create explosive runs when Minnesota commits extra defenders to pressure, potentially leaving Gibbs matched against a safety with room to operate.
That could turn Minnesota’s aggressiveness into a weakness if Detroit executes its blocking assignments.
Can Detroit Hand Minnesota Its First Loss?
The numbers suggest Sunday could feature one of the NFL’s most fascinating matchups.

Detroit enters the game at 4-2, riding a two-game winning streak after defeating the Green Bay Packers 20-17 last Sunday.
Minnesota, meanwhile, is the NFL’s last remaining unbeaten team.
Something has to give.
The Vikings have dominated opponents by making quarterbacks uncomfortable, forcing mistakes, and creating negative plays.
But Goff has spent the opening six games demonstrating that sending extra defenders doesn’t necessarily bother him.
If Detroit’s offensive line can handle Minnesota’s pressure and Gibbs can pick up the blitz, the Lions should have opportunities to attack downfield.
The Vikings have the NFL’s most terrifying blitzing defense. Unfortunately for Minnesota, Jared Goff might be exactly the wrong quarterback to blitz.
