Evan Turner isn’t buying the “beef” between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
On a recent episode of Sports Illustrated’s “Open Floor” podcast, Turner shared his perspective on Tatum and Brown’s relationship during their time with the Boston Celtics.
“The thing of them saying they were never really friends is crazy because I know for sure they had the utmost respect for each other,” Turner said. “At least when I was around, when you walk in, when they look around, I’ve watched JT walk up to JB and shake his hand. I watched JT, the vice versa.
“Even when they were younger, they don’t trip over females or who’s the man. There’s no real beef here. There’s no real foundational beef that I thought and like no structural beef. It’s just two alphas walking on a different — you know what I mean, in the same Serengeti.”

Turner is in a better position than most to speak on their relationship.
Although he never played alongside Tatum and Brown, Turner spent the 2020-21 NBA season on Boston’s coaching staff under Brad Stevens, working primarily in player development.
The Celtics finished with a 36-36 record that season before losing to the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs.
Tatum earned his second All-Star selection in 2020-21 while Brown earned his first. They were both named All-Stars in four of their nine seasons together.
They may not have been best friends, but Turner doesn’t believe there was any underlying animosity between the two Celtics stars.
