The Indianapolis Colts are trading key pieces from their NFL roster this season to recoup some draft capital as they enter what could be a lengthy multi-year rebuild after firing Chris Ballard.
One of the most fascinating players who could be dealt this year is star running back Jonathan Taylor. There’s been plenty of buzz about a trade, but so far, the Colts haven’t gone for anything. As the deadline nears, doubt might creep in about a trade.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano revealed that the Colts are taking a stance on the Taylor trade talks that might frustrate other teams, but is perfectly reasonable for the Colts. Instead of simply trading him away, the Colts don’t believe they need to trade him this season.
Colts take firm stance on Jonathan Taylor trade, might not deal him this season
“The Colts are still asking for a lot for RB Jonathan Taylor and taking the stance that they don’t need to move him,” Graziano writes.
This is a noteworthy update for the Colts and the trade market for the star running back. While teams like the Denver Broncos and New York Giants might have serious interest in Taylor, the Colts don’t feel like they have to trade him now.
He is under contract beyond the 2026 season, so the Colts could keep him for the rest of 2026, aim to get more in a trade next offseason, or even keep him long-term.

With the Colts already trading Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, they’ve made it clear they’re selling. But since Taylor isn’t hitting free agency after this season, the potential for a trade is a lot less likely than it would be with rentals.
Despite so much interest in Taylor this season leading up to the trade deadline, there’s a very real possibility that Taylor remains in Indianapolis.
This trade saga is far from over, but the current signs are pointing towards the Colts being more than willing to keep Taylor around since he’s already under contract beyond 2026.
